Boorokup Restoration Project
Arranged funding for the Boorokup Restoration Project being undertaken by Native Carbon 2 and Threshold Environmental.
Boorokup is an ecological restoration project focussed on a 359hectare site, in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia. Containing approximately one third of all Australian plant species, the Great Southern is recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot.
In addition to carbon dioxide capture, key objectives of the project are:
- re-establishing native ecosystems that are productive, self-replicating, and biologically diverse
- installing a digital platform to measure the natural and social capital generated from the project
- ongoing involvement of traditional owners and the wider community
InterEarth
Bespoke assignment providing advice to InterEarth (this is an ongoing assignment).
InterEarth is a start-up business developing a proprietary system to capture and permanently sequester carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. The InterEarth system involves growing trees, harvesting biomass from the plantation, and storing the biomass in a fire and decay proof vault.
Coppicing trees allows multiple biomass harvests from the plantation. InterEarth reports that by establishing and maintaining appropriate storage conditions, the carbon-dioxide contained in the biomass is permanently sequestered.
In addition to carbon dioxide capture and sequestration, the InterEarth system delivers greater local investment and economic activity, improved soil quality, a reduction in secondary salination soil erosion and desertification, and helps restore floral and faunal habitats.
